I am about to head out of work for the weekend and enjoy the beautiful holiday at "my house" (aka: my parents cottage) in Grand Haven, Michigan when I realized I couldn't think of anything I learned today. Yes, I learned that 5% of Quartz countertops are solid surface in order to hold the stone together. That wasn't the glamour I was looking for in a Friday blog post. As I was thinking about this my friend asked if I was working on Monday and I told him that I was "playing it by ear" because it's an optional day for me (perk of working for your dad)! That's when I realized I didn't know the origin of that saying. Had I thought about it a little harder before I immediately jumped on Google I think I could have figured it out though.
Initially, this tagline referred to the playing of music without reference to sheet music. These days it is used figuratively to mean 'handle a situation in an impromptu manner', i.e. without reference to pre-determined rules or guidelines.
Happy 4th of July! :) I'm going to play this whole weekend 'by ear'!
