So, big news is... I got the job as the Marketing Coordinator for the Center for Community Leadership (a program of the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce)! I had my first "unofficial" day yesterday (but technically don't start full time until Aug 30st). So that's my big exciting news! As I was just looking at my calendar to see which day I officially start my mind went on a brief tangent because the calendar technically starts it's week with Sunday but I really feel that each week begins with Monday. What do you think, Monday or Sunday?
Ok, that's not what I learned today. Today I learned what felt like 9 million things about my new job. None of them seem flashy enough to blog about just yet though. A thing I did recently learn about (and for the first time in my life actually THINK about) was krab. With a K. I feel like I blog about food a lot, but I suppose it's just because I am constantly finding out these little mysteries about things that seem so normal until you look into a little bit. This blog has really opened my mind up to questioning the unknowns in my life.
So what is Krab you may ask? Well first of all, it's not always called KRAB, a lot of times it's just refereed to as "crab" or "imitation crab meat". It is essentially a mush of white fish called surimi (the mush is called that, that is not a type of fish) and then it is shaped and cured to resemble the texture of crab meat. The two most common ingredients in the surimi are Alaskan Pollock and egg whites (used as a binding substance). Do yourself a favor and don't click on the wikipedia link I attached to surimi. It makes you never want to enjoy krab stick ever again! After this is to an appropriate krab-eqsque-slightly stringly-rubbery texture the outside of fake crustacean is then artificially colored red-ish to make it appear to look like the flesh of a snow crab leg. Yummy.
I'm not saying I'm angry with what I have found out about krab or that I won't enjoy it when it may or may not be stuffed in my sushi rolls, all I know is that now I know. It is pulverized white fish, mixed with some egg whites possibly, cooked to resemble crab, possibly gets a crab taste/smell injection (or something??), gets dyed some artificial color and then I eat it. At least it's lower in cholesterol!!
