For the record, I tried to blog this yesterday but for some reason google blogger was down. Yesterday I learned how to make my own toothpaste from my hipster friend, Nicole. She'll be mad when she reads that I call her a hipster, haha. So here it is folks...
Step 1) Pour half of a cup of baking soda in a mixing bowl. According to wikihow baking soda has a natural cleansing ability and is often found in commercial toothpastes. It's not toxic and will help polish your toofers. (Some people do three parts baking soda for every one part salt... if you're interested in mixing it up a bit).
Step 2) Add three teaspoons (15g) of glycerine. This is optional; it acts as a sweetener. An alternative is stevia. You can get this at most pharmacies or at craft stores that sell soap-making supplies.
Step 3) Add 1/4 cup (60g) of household hydrogen peroxide and one drop of peppermint oil. The hydrogen peroxide will naturally disinfect your mouth and as a bonus will help whiten your teeth! If you don't have hydrogen peroxide, just use water. Also, good to note that this is house-hold hydrogen peroxide - NOT the hair bleaching kind. (Better safe than sorry!)
Step 4) Mix the ingredients together until they turn into a paste.
Step 5) Store your homemade toothpaste at room temperature in a plastic container so it doesn't try out! :)
Ta da!! Your very own toothpaste!! As I was looking this up to confirm that Nicole was indeed correct I found an interesting tidbit that Benjamin Franklin made his own toothpaste which was a mixture of ground charcoal and honey. Nasty!
