Name that ice cream flavor that was once described by the Chicago Tribune as "smurf-blue, marshmellow-sweet, and tasting remarkably like Froot Loops and Fruity Pebbles"? If you are from the midwest you most likely know that I am talking about none-other-than Blue Moon Ice Cream. (Which, after learning my little fact about Blue Moon I also discovered that it is pretty much an upper-mid-west-exclusive flavor - woot woot)! What I learned is that the actual 'flavor' of blue moon is actually ........nutmeg. Yes, nutmeg. After doing some research though it seems that Blue Moon is actually a mystery and the people who own the recipe that was originally created in the 40's/50's, Weber & Co. won't reveal the secret ingredient, but they say that a colorless version is used in medicines and beverages to mask bitter flavors.
I don't even actually eat blue moon ice cream so I can't give any REAL insight on whether or not it's nutmeg or not with 100% certainty. I'm a soft-serve twist kind of girl myself. What do you think? Is it nutmeg? Or was I lied to?? I know one thing - I'm definitely going to do a taste test one of these days up at Sundae's at the Cottage or Miss Lisa's!!
All I know is that if Blue Moon IS in fact nutmeg flavored ice cream whoever decided to dye it blue was a marketing genius! Kudos to them, if they exist! - Lizzie
