Apparently Beefeater is not just a type of gin. I am currently reading "Mennonite in a Little Black Dress" by Rhoda Janzen and on pg. 63 she says:
"He did have a birds eye view of the Nest, as he was fully six foot six, a vantage point from which the Nest would have been impossible to ignore. It sat smartly on her head, like the tall black hats worn by beefeaters at Buckingham Palace."
I have BEEN to Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London. I studied abroad in the United Kingdom for goodness sake! I should have known what a beefeater is. Technically they are "The Yeomen Warders of Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress the Tower of London" but commonly are referred to as "Beefeaters". Makes sense that Beefeaters gin is from the UK, huh?
So, Beefeaters are supposed to protect the Tower of London and watch after Her Majesty's Crown Jewels. Side note... I had THIS conversation yesterday while playing Cranium...
ME:
"Where does the Queen keep the British Crown Jewels?
a) In the top drawer of her dresser
b) In the Tower of London
c) In the British Museum
d) (I don't remember what all the answers were)"
OTHER TEAM:
"Umm...C?"
ME:
Wrong, Tower of London
OTHER TEAM:
"What? No way. That doesn't make any sense. Why would they keep the British Jewels in London?"
ME:
What?
OTHER TEAM:
"Why wouldn't they keep them in Britain????
True Story.
